Macroscopic forcing method: A tool for turbulence modeling and analysis of closures

This study presents a numerical procedure, which we call the macroscopic forcing method (MFM), reveals differential operators acting on mean fields of quantities transported by underlying fluctuating flows. Specifically, MFM can precisely determine eddy diffusivity operator, or more broadly said, it reveal associated with turbulence closure for scalar and momentum transport. We present this methodology considering canonical problems increasing complexity. Starting from well-known problem dispersion passive scalars parallel flows elucidate basic steps in quantitative determination viscosity using MFM. Utilizing operator representation Fourier space, obtain stand-alone compact analytical that accurately capture nonlocal mixing effects. Furthermore, cost-effective generalization analysis nonhomogeneous wall-bounded is developed comprehensively discussed through demonstrative example. Extension transport theoretically constructed introduction generalized equation. show obtained equation provide exact RANS solutions averaging Navier-Stokes introduce as an effective tool understanding non-Boussinesq effects assessment model forms closures, particularly, anisotropy nonlocality mixing.
